5 Caffeine Free Ways to Feel Awake in the Morning (Yes, They Exist!)

Your alarm goes off and everything else seems so much more uncomfortable than the comfortable warm duvet that you’re in.  For those days that you can’t sleep in (are there really any days that you can?), try these super simple life hacks to help you feel more awake in the mornings, and throughout your entire day. Read on for my top five ways to get energized in the morning without caffeine.

Water: Before reaching for your first cup of coffee, try drinking a full cup of room temperature lemon water. If you’re like our team at VITRUVIyou probably have a million things to do in the morning before remembering to drink water, so just keep a large glass of water beside your bed and make that the first thing you do. Dehydration is known to cause tiredness, and one cup of water at the start of your day helps to increase your metabolism and promote blood flow prompting your body to know that it’s time to wake up and get energized.

Shower: This one might sound silly, but if you’re one of those people who like to shower in the evening, trying opting for a cold shower in the morning. The cold shower stimulates blood flow, and has also been shown to help you feel happier (the cold stimulates the brain’s “blue spot,” which is associated with relieving depression and elevating mood)—which is perfect for kick-starting your day in a good mood. Yes it sounds like an unpleasant way to start a day, but start by just ending your shower with a sip of cold for 5 seconds, then work up to 10, 15 seconds etc. (If you need more motivation, remember that cold water is also great for your hair.)

Exercise: A quick workout session in the morning boosts your heart rate and gets your blood flowing helping you feel more alert and awake. Additionally, it increases your body temperature which will help prep you for a (cold) shower. You don’t need to go to the gym for a workout: Do a 21 min workout in your living and bedroom with three 7-minute interval training session (7 minutes of lunges and squats, 7 minutes of crunches, and 7 minutes of push-ups).

Aromatherapy: WAKE is our favorite morning time ritual because it's blended with essential oils traditionally used in increasing alertness and energy and for creating consistency in the beginning of your day. Bergamot helps to gently increase your alertness and juniper eases morning nerves without any sedative effects. Eucalyptus helps to wake you up and promote deep breathing (try hanging eucalyptus in your morning shower for a full experience—we did a full tutorial here).

 

Don’t hit snooze: No matter how tempting it is, don't do it! Studies have shown that hitting the snooze button actually makes you more tired. The reason is that as soon as you hit ‘snooze,’ your brain goes back into sleep mode and starts a new sleep cycle (which is 90 minutes), so unless you have time for 90 minute snooze, resist the urge!
