DIY Detox: Lavender, Green Tea & Coconut Milk Bath

Food and juice cleanses are commonly used to rid the body of toxins and reset the system, but there are other ways to stimulate the body’s natural detoxification process. One of my favorite healthy rituals not only soothes and relaxes with aromatherapy, it detoxifies the skin and eliminates toxins from the body, while providing an anti-aging antioxidant boost. If you haven’t adopted this practice already, then you should definitely consider a weekly detox bath—read on to find out why.

Our toxic burden is a result of the toxins we are exposed to and our body’s ability to flush them out naturally. Consider your possible exposure to toxins in just one morning: You might start your day with shower water potentially contaminated with pollutants, brush your teeth with toothpaste containing harmful chemicals and then eat breakfast where the food has been treated with pesticides or is genetically modified. All of this takes place before you’ve even left your house!

When metabolic waste from toxins accumulates in our bodies, it increases our chances of getting sick. While it’s impossible to completely avoid exposure to all toxins, we can improve our body’s ability to eliminate them and minimize our exposure to them.

One way to stimulate our body’s natural detoxification process is through a detox bath, where toxins are released through our skin via sweat. I've compiled an easy, at-home, DIY detox bath for just this.

DIY Detox: Lavender, Green Tea & Coconut Milk Bath

½ cup dried lavender buds

2 drops lavender essential oil

5 teaspoons green tea

1 cup pink Himalayan sea salt or Dead Sea salt

2 tablespoons organic olive oil

1 cup coconut milk

1 muslin bag or cheesecloth

Combine the green tea and dried lavender in the muslin bag or cheesecloth and tie it off. Over high heat, boil a gallon of water. Turn off the heat, and let the lavender and green tea blend steep for at least 30 minutes. Draw the bath with warm water, adding the sea salt, lavender essential oil, olive oil, coconut milk, and the green tea & lavender blend. Enjoy the bath for 20-40 minutes. Remember to keep a glass of water nearby to stay hydrated during the bath. This also makes a great foot soak.

Here’s a breakdown of the benefits of the ingredients:

  • Lavender buds are calming and help detoxify the skin by removing bacteria.
  • Lavender essential oil relaxes with aromatherapy.
  • Green tea flushes out toxins and replenishes with antioxidants.
  • Sea salt helps eliminate toxins and soothes tired muscles.
  • Olive oil hydrates and moisturizes.
  • Coconut milk nourishes and softens skin.
