From Face To Feet: Lychee Benefits For Skin

If you spot lychees (litchis) at your local market, snatch them up as the season is this close to being over! You might have tried them in the ubiquitous summer lychee cocktail du jour, but your body will benefit more if you incorporate them into your skincare routine for an exotic Asian-inspired treatment.

A tropical fruit native to China and Southeast Asia and cultivated throughout the world, their distinct strawberry-red, spiky rough rind covers the sweet and juicy, translucent white or pink flesh, which provides immense health benefits.  Lychees are so high in antioxidant vitamin C, they provide more than 100% of the daily-recommended value in one serving.  Also rich in B vitamins, oligonol and potassium, lychee boasts tremendous skin-enhancing benefits including diminishing the appearance of fine lines, lightening dark pigmentation from age spots, reducing acne and improving the overall appearance and tone of skin.

Glowing Lychee, Almond & Yogurt Face mask

5 fresh lychees, peeled, deseeded and smashed

2 tablespoons smashed banana

1 teaspoon almond paste (soak almonds in water overnight then blend into a paste)

optional for vegan: 1 teaspoon yogurt

Combine all ingredients to create a smooth paste.  Apply to your face and décolletage for 20 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.

In addition to the numerous benefits of lychee in this mask, the antioxidant rich banana gently nourishes, moisturizes, exfoliates and brightens the skin, while the almond helps to reduce fine lines, delivering an overall natural glow.

Soothing Lychee, Lavender & Chamomile Foot Soak

10 lychees, peeled and deseeded

10 lychees, peeled, deseeded and pureed

6 cups milk (add more according to the size of your soaking bowl)

3 cups water

¼ cup olive oil

1 cup dried chamomile and lavender blend

In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add the milk and water and heat until warm.  Remove from the stove, add the oil and pureed lychees to the milk mixture and do a heat test on your hand to make sure it’s at a safe temperature for your skin.

Place the 10 whole lychees at the bottom of the bowl, add the chamomile and lavender blend and cover with the milk mixture.  Soak your feet for about 10 minutes, rolling your feet over the whole lychees for a gentle massage and breathing in the soothing scents for added aromatherapy.  Rinse your feet, exfoliate and moisturize to complete your lychee foot spa treatment.
