5 Natural Perfumes To Have You Smelling Heavenly
So you're standing in line at the post office when a woman walks in and you catch a whiff of her overpowering scent... your throat gets scratchy, your eyes start to water and you feel as if you're being drowned in a sea of perfume. This was me a few weeks ago. Most people haven't a clue that the health risks of synthetic perfumes are serious business. These perfumes, which contain toxic petroleum and coal-derived synthetic chemicals, phthalates—also known as hormone disrupting chemicals—as well as countless other carcinogenic ingredients have been linked to hormone, endocrine and reproductive system disruptions. I mean, all you have to do is look it up on Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetics Database, and BOOM, there it is... artificial fragrance should be booted out of your beauty routine, stat!
Products with fragrance—everything from conventional laundry detergent, to soap and shampoo—are terrible for the environment and are human immune toxicants and irritants. I ain't about that life.
Thankfully there are green beauty brands that are doing some good in the "fragrance" department! They're offering perfumes in various forms and strength—solid, spray, roll-on, eau de parfum and perfume oils—that are totally free from the nasty ingredients added into conventional perfumes. Let's have a look at my 5 picks, shall we?
1. Pour Le Monde - Envision
This gorgeous bottle of eau de parfum contains certified 100% natural essential oils and natural isolates, natural grain alcohol and distilled water. It's described best as smooth and seductive, with a punch! The top notes of this perfume are a citrus accord of Italian bergamot, Brazilian orange, Persian lime, Florida grapefruit and pink peppercorn for that little kick! Middle notes of lavender from the fields of South France, Palma rosa and Egyptian geranium rose for a hint of femininity. Then, the base is an Indonesian patchouli and creamy sandalwood blend with Madagascar vanilla to create a warmth and sweetness. Truly beautiful!
What makes Joyful by My Daughters Fragrances (MDF) so special? Well, for one, its notes of orange flower, lime blossom, rose, jasmine and sandalwood are fresh, floral and uplifting! (Like its name!) It lingers beautifully, and isn't too sweet—but just the right amount of clean, fresh and happy. This beautiful bottle of perfume is free from colorants, phthalates, parabens and animal products (cruelty-free) and completely full of essential oils, resins, absolutes.
Stress be gone with HollyBeth Organics’ USDA Certified Organic Flourish Calming Perfume. This vegan, gluten-free and cruelty-free concentrate features a blend of organic essential oils that will quite possibly evoke the peaceful feeling of a quiet summer day. Aromatherapeutic and uplifting, HollyBeth Organics’ signature scent is a handcrafted proprietary blend of marjoram and geranium essential oils that transform to spicy middle and bottom notes of bergamot and ylang ylang... creating a distinctive, earthy citrus aroma... in hopes to provoke a lively, optimistic and grounded outlook.
I already am a big fan of by Rosie Jane's - Leila Lou's Natural Eau De Parfum scent! So, I figured I'd love James... seeing how it's light and earthy, with a hint of romance. (Basically me in a nutshell, haha jk...maybe.) The top note is fresh fig, the middle: a warm middle of gardenia and then a spicy lasting base of amber. These notes interact beautifully and create an intoxicating fragrance that's warm, inviting and still classically fresh. These perfumes are paraben, sulfate, phthalate and phosphate-free.
Evoking the blue and white washed seaside village of Essaouira (pronounced es-suh-weer-uh), Morocco, this perfume oil isn't an easily forgotten scent. Notes of light rose and woodsy sandalwood, with a side of herbaceous geranium and lavender, accented by a bright note of petitgrain—make this roll-on perfume oil fresh, crisp and totally memorable. Kahina's Perfume Oil uses 100% steam distilled essential oils in a base of jojoba oil.
