Why Your Skincare Should Be Edible

Whilst there is a growing awareness of the need to use pure and organic ingredients on our skin, at Edible Beauty our gold standard for purity is an “edible” ingredients list.

As the founder of Edible Beauty Australia, I feel so strongly about our products being “edible” that I pledge that “if you would not put in your mouth, we would not put it in our products." As a naturopath, I created the Edible Beauty range whilst working at a fertility clinic. I was recommending that in addition to changes to their food and lifestyle routines, my patients make changes to their personal care products. I was shocked to find that there were very few options available for skincare products that were "edible" and that were luxurious and therapeutic. As a result, I embarked on creating a therapeutic, wildcrafted, botanical and edible skincare line.

How Edible Beauty Is Different Than Other Natural Skincare Brands

One of the common traps we may fall into when considering natural products is that they are organic—organic does not make a product edible however. In fact, many organic products may contain synthetic chemicals, fragrances and preservatives along with organic botanical extracts. Our products are made with pure, wildcrafted ingredients, which are ALSO edible.

This means that not only are our products free of the usual nasties—sulfates, parabens, phthalates etc.—they are also free of benzyl alcohol, fragrances, propylene glycol, all preservatives, colours, synthetics and any ingredient that you would not recognise or find in your food. Every ingredient in our products is pure and botanical, and good enough to eat.

Being edible does not mean that we compromise on the therapeutic actions of our skin care range. In fact, the regenerating, healing and ant-aging benefits of our skincare is enhanced through the inclusion of hydrating, antioxidant, nutrient and mineral-rich botanical extracts.

Like the other organs in our body, the skin exudes youthful vitality and radiance when it harmoniously absorbs the living nutrition and subtle energy from nourishing toxin-free food and skin care.

Why Skincare Should Be Edible

The skin, being the largest organ of the body, absorbs close to 60% of the products that we place on it. Given we absorb such a large percentage of what we put on our skin and the fact that what we put on our skin bypasses our digestive and detoxification systems, what we are putting on our skin becomes just as important as what we are eating.

Whilst you may think ‘well it is only a small amount’ of chemicals that end up in the body, using three or four products with phthalates or parabens in it will add up. What also could be happening is the ‘cocktail effect’ of different synthetic chemicals mixing, and that combination has led researchers to say that the effect of endocrine disrupting chemicals “may be significantly underestimated” (UNEP State of Science Endocrine disrupting Chemicals report).

Toxins in our skincare, including fragrances and preservatives, have been linked to allergies, auto-immune conditions, hormonal imbalances, infertility and cancer.

How to Choose 'Edible' Skincare

Your skincare products should be as pure as the foods you are eating. The best way to read a skincare product ingredients list is to read each ingredient as if it were something that you might put in your mouth.

I recommend that you try to avoid the products that contain “non-edible” ingredients at least 80% of time, or whenever it is within your control. Start with the products you are using most frequently for example your cleanser, lotion, lipstick and foundation. As you finish products, replace them with nontoxic alternatives and before you know it you will have a kit of natural and beautiful toxin-free personal care products. You will delight in finding natural and equally effective products by reputable company.

If we can follow the ‘edible beauty’ rule when it comes to toxin free skin care we can ensure both our bodies and those of our newborns are being provided with the most vital and optimal nourishment, both inside and out.
